Hi everybody ,

Many people ask about how to tame their cockatiels . In this topic I'll show you how . Cockatiels are very cute and funny parrots so they worth the try .

There are two ways to tame your cockatiel depending on its age .

First way : Taming mature birds :

This way isn't as affective as the other one but you might want to tame an adult bird for a reason ; whether because it's hard to get a baby bird to hand-rear or not having the will to get through hand-feeding process or for any other reason .

The first thing to do is to clip your birds wings as it helps a lot in the taming process . This is a link to help you know how to clip your birds wings by yourself :

http://www.parrotparrot.com/lovebirds/wings.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

After that the bird is put in a cage alone putting into consideration that the cage level should be less than your height . This has a great effect on the bird , when the bird is at a high lever it feels magnificence and will never obey you at the same time if you lower the cage or elevate to put food or water the bird will get scared and panic.

Leave the bird in its cage until it adapts to it and feels safe and secure then comes the first step of training . Open the cage door and let the bird out by its own ( remember that the bird wings are clipped beforehand ).

Cockatiels are playful so your bird will explore the cage until it finds the door then gets out of the cage .

The bird will climb up the cage and stands at the top happily .

Notice how are wings clipped .

The next step is to let the bird feel hungry then grab some of his favorite food in your hand which is almost sunflower seeds as it's preferred by parrots and slowly get near to the bird , get your hand near to the bird with this food in and wait until it starts to eat from it . Repeat doing this for some days until the bird trusts you and isn't afraid of your hands . Then try to scratch your birds head and specially its cheeks , if the parrot allows you to do that then congratulations , all you need to do now is to put your hand or finger in front of the bird to step up . If the bird doesn't get the idea all you need to do is to touch its legs or chest and it will step up . This photo shows the way to let the bird step up .

These photos show how to scratch the head

Sometimes birds are cage bound so they won't get out of it easily because of fear . In this case you will have to introduce your hand to it inside the cage and do the previous steps .

Image

This way requires a lot of patience and repetition and it's not as affective as the second way . It varies from one bird to another so it might work on some birds but might not work with some others .

Second way : Taming a baby bird :

In this way baby birds are separated from their parents and handfed .

This link shows you how to hand-feed a baby cockatiel :

This way depends on breeding cockatiels by you or by one of your friends or trying to get a baby bird anyway at the age of two to three weeks .

Image

That's to leave the babies for their parents for the first days to feed and get immunity .

Image

When the bird is 2 or 3 weeks you can take it from the nest box . One bird is good for taming and training as it will be human imprinted . That allows a better opportunity for the bird to learn talking and consider you its friend .

Image

You can also tame more than one baby at the same time.

Image

Then you start hand feeding the bird . Bread and milk meal and egg and biscuit meal are important as they help the bird to grow better and bigger .

Make sure the birds crop is full

Image

Keep on hand feeding your bird until its five to six weeks of age you can start introducing pellets or seeds then .

Image

Cockatiels are friendly , if you have another smaller parrot like budgies or love birds it would share affection with them .
