Hi everybody ,

This topic was put in the arab forum by " Mohammed Reda " so , all his copyrights are reserved .

In this topic I'll talk about mating and preparing birds to lay eggs .

Male birds are put in one aviary together so that they can fly and move freely and females in another one . The two aviaries are put in front of each other until birds get mature .

Cockatiels reach maturity at the age of 8 months and become ready to breed . But it's better to wait at least at the age of 10 months to allow birds to breed . Now we are fronting two ways , keeping birds in groups or in pairs .

Keeping in groups ( aviaries ) :

1- Male birds are released in the aviary where perches and water and food bowls are settled , then we leave them for 4 to 5 days .

2- Now females can be put with males , but they should be equal to males in number then we leave them with males for another 5 days .

3- After 5 days nest boxes are put .

Keeping in pairs ( cages ) :

1- Males are separated and divided in cages , each male in a cage for 2 to 3 days .

2- After a week a female is put with every male among the cages for 3 days.

3- After 3 days nest boxes are put .

Important note :

During this time we stop the supplementary food and depend on seeds until we put the nest box we can feed the birds the supplementary food again .For the first three days from putting the nest box just egg and biscuit mix is fed to birds as a supplement . On the fourth day we can add the second meal which can be cucumber or watercress . Within a week to 10 days the birds lay their first egg .

The mating scene

Once males are released in the aviary you hear a lot of loud singing and warbling from and notice male dances in which males raise their wings while being closed slightly away from their bodies with their comb down and move quickly on the perches . Then once females are put with them that show increases , at the beginning females might reject males but by the time they accept males and pose for fertilizing then males ride on females and the process is completed . After mating the male cockatiel rushes towards the nest box to discover it , then it gets inside it and starts to warble to attract and encourage the female to enter the nest box . After a few time the female heads towards the nest box to enter it . Now starts the early stages of breeding as the male exits the nest box followed by the female that stays in the nest box to prepare for laying eggs . By staying on this diet females will lay eggs and incubate it knowing that they have the main rule, and the incubation period is almost 21 days in regular states .

Best wishes and good luck :)
