Vitamin A deficiency is one of the most common vitamin deficiencies in birds. Birds that eat just seed food are the most susceptible to vitamin A deficiency. The reproductive, digestive, and respiratory systems are the ones most affected by this deficiency. The symptoms depend on which system is being affected. Mainly the respiratory system is the most affected with symptoms that can be obvious by just opening the bird mouth and look inside. There will be a white spots in the mouth and at the end of the tongue. These white spots will develop and get inflamed forming abscesses that will block the respiratory pathway and the bird will die because of suffocation. Other symptoms include coughing, whistling, nose discharge, diarrhea, swollen eyes, eye discharge, loss of appetite, and slimy mouth. The bird dies not from the deficiency but due to the side effects following vitamin A deficiency. A blood sample should be taken to determine which system is being affected and antibiotic sensitivity test will be done to choose the right antibiotic that will kill the bacteria.
Prevention is so easy; just offer your birds wide varieties of vegetable beside its seed diet. Food high in vitamin A includes fresh and dried red pepper, broccoli, carrot, spinach, and egg yolk. Food low in vitamin A include lettuce, apple, corn, grape, and orange
