Do you use wheat germ or wheat germ oil for your birds? If yes, you are doing a good job taking extra care of your birds, if not lets go through this topic trying to mention the benefits of using wheat germ or its oil in feeding our birds.
Wheat germ is that part of wheat seed that represent just 3% of the total weight of the seed. It is the part that will germinate forming a new wheat plant so from the germination process it took its name (germ). Wheat germ is the richest part of the wheat seed in fat beside other beneficial nutrients. So it has been used in forming healthy diets for either human or birds.

Wheat germ is high in:
- Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids
Those have been proven to lower bad cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol levels in blood. They cannot be synthesized in the body so they have to be supplied in the diet. They have a vital role in decreasing blood pressure and increase the functionality of the immune system.

- B complex vitamin
Wheat germ has almost all B vitamins which have great benefits for our birds. It is a good source of B1, B2, and B3, beside folic and pantothenic acids.

- Vitamin E
Wheat germ oil is the highest plant oils in vitamin E concentration. Vitamin E is needed for a normal nervous system functions and muscle functionality. This vitamin is always known as “fertility vitamin” so it is being used to boost fertility in birds in combination with Selenium.

- Minerals
Wheat germ is high in Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorous, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, and Selenium (Se). Se should be with vitamin E for proper fertility boost.

- Wheat germ is high in protein, carbohydrate, and fiber.

Wheat is germ oil
Oil is being extracted from wheat germ and used as a supplement for our birds to get all the good things that mentioned before. And one of the greatest benefits is a good source of vitamin E so, the oil is used in preparation for a good breeding season.

How much wheat germ oil should I use?

Normal birds: 2 drops daily per 35g of food.
Molting birds: 3 drops daily per 35g of food.
Breeding birds: 4 drops daily per 35g food a week before breeding season then 2 drops every day.

Can I use wheat germ by itself?
The answer is yes. What I am using now is feeding it twice a week; 1/2 tea spoon of wheat germ for each pair as treat or mix 1/2 tea spoon with 1 boiled egg after smashing it, or mix it with any kind of vegetables or fruit that I give to my birds (this is my way of feeding).

Thank you and I hope you enjoyed my topic about the benefits of feeding wheat germ or its oil.

The day after I read your post, I gave wheat germ in small flakes (the one used for human nutrition), to my canaries, about a tea spoon each, they all started eating it with eagerness, and it was their first time. I think it is a perfect complement for the birds, and also a very good “transport” for other products that should be provided just a few drops or a bit of powder, each.
Actually I give the wheat germ mixed with a bit of Spirulina powder.
Best regards

Glad that you tried it and worked. Yes I am using the one that is used for human nutrition and my birds go crazy for it. I offer it three times a week, a full teaspoon for each pair. And yes you can mix it with anything you offer to birds and as a transporter or a carrier for other feed.
Best wishes
