Calcium is the most nutritional deficiency facing our birds.
Calcium has many important functions to keep our birds healthy and active. Some of these functions include but not limited to:
The main building block of the skeleton. So calcium deficient birds have a greater chance to break bones or have rickets disease.
Calcium has an important role as a component of claws, beaks and feathers so calcium deficiency can affect these parts and their functions.
Calcium is the main component of the egg shell. Low or lack of calcium in the food of breeding hens leads to thin shelled or soft eggs. Those eggs will not hatch.
Calcium that goes to egg production with no or low calcium in the diet leads to low calcium going to nerves and muscles. This leads to egg binding and some times death of the hen due to that.

Calcium is needed in excess in birds food when we have fast growing young chicks in the nest. Insufficient calcium will lead to rickets, week bones , splayed legs and lack of nerve and muscle calcium.

In general calcium deficiency in the diet has certain symptoms such as poor co-ordination, fits and seizures, rickets, and poor bone formation and strength.
The biggest issue with calcium deficiency is actually behavioral. This problem is represented by feather plucking, biting and aggression.

Solving calcium deficiency is so easy, and always prevention is better than treatment, you can:
- Offer a dark green leafy vegetables, broccoli, and yogurt.
- Offer egg shell after grinding, oyster shell, cuttlefish bone, or mineral blocks.
- or choose a seed food that indicate calcium is being added.
