Hi everybody ,

This topic was put in the arab forum by " Mohammed Reda " so , all his copyrights are reserved .

This is a link to the original text : http://www.canaryfans.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=38072" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In this topic I'll talk about some of the problems that we might face during keeping cockatiels . In fact cockatiels have little problems that we all face and all you need is patience and commonsense .

1- No harmony between birds :

Sometimes the pair we chose for breeding don't get along with each other and no mating happens for no reasons , although they are of the appropriate age and everything is set for them the right way . Here we should interfere by separating the female from the male and putting it in another cage for three to four days . After that the female is put again in the males cage . Then we notice whether the pair are going to get along or not . If not , we separate the female again but this time for a week to ten days and this time the opportunities of rejection is rare .

2- Leaving the eggs and the nest box :

It happens frequently that females leave the nest box with the eggs inside without a reasonable reason . It becomes confusing when everything is set alright . But this problem is because of two reasons : the presence of bugs and mites inside the nest box which force the birds to leave the nest because of the successive annoying and the excessive checking of the nest box and moving the cage from one place to another which makes the birds feel unsecure as cockatiels are quiet and peaceful and don't like anybody to mess with their systems and as a result they leave the nest box . So before hanging the nest boxes we should clean , disinfect and protect them against mites and bugs by washing them with disinfectants and putting them to dry in the sun . Then after that pesticides are added in small amounts at the bottom of the nest box then wood chips are put over it . Also we shouldn't neglect cleaning the cage and food and water bowls with hot water . We should let the birds in a quiet and peaceful place without annoying them , moving their cages and checking the eggs in the nest box a lot ( two times are fair enough the first in the fifth day ( third egg ) and the second in the sixteenth or seventeenth day for a few seconds to know the number of eggs . In the 21st day we check the eggs and try to hear quickly any weak chirping sounds coming from the eggs or if there is a crack in one of the eggs indicating the hatching process ) .

3- Feather plucking :

This problem appears at the late period of breeding as parents pluck their babies feathers and specially from the comb . This is because the birds want to start a new breeding period so they drive their babies to leave the nest box . In this case if the baby cockatiels are weaned so we can remove the nest box and leave the babies with their parents in the cage , and if this problem exists when the babies are still not weaned so , they should be handfed and separated from their parents .

Best wishes and good luck :)
