My name is Lindsay. I am a 23 year old female college student. I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota of the United States of America. I care for my own bird, my Mom's bird, and also volunteer at a bird sanctuary. My bird is a 15 year old lutino cockatiel. I have had him since I was in 3rd grade. A few years ago he went blind, but he is still very happy and I love him the same. He's kind of like my baby. My Mom also has a cockatiel which she adopted from the bird sanctuary we volunteer at. Her cockatiel has liver disease and is very crippled, but she still manages to get around okay and is also happy.

The bird sanctuary I volunteer at is called Midwest Avian Adoption & Rescue Services (MAARS). It is a nonprofit organization that was started by a woman and her sister. It houses up to 300 birds at a time. There is a six month waiting list to admit a bird into our facility because there are so many homeless birds out there. We hope to move to a larger facility some day and also have our own veterinary clinic, but we need more funding/donations for that. The birds were either caught in the wild illegally, abandoned, abused, pet owner died, or they were no longer wanted. Most of them have moderate to serious behavioral problems because they were not cared for properly. Many of them also have permanent physical damage. It's a very sad situation, and that is why we need all the help we can get. Whether it is adoption, donation, education, or volunteering. Check out the bird sanctuary at http://www.maars.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My goals are to educate people about how to properly care for birds, keep impulse buyers from purchasing birds, promote adoption, stop pet stores from selling birds, stop over breeding, and help all the birds on a personal level.

If anyone ever has any questions or comments feel free to email me at lmnorthrup@jacks.sdstate.edu
