Checklist Canary Birth Control Methods

1. Normally, canary females are broody only from spring into early summer, reflecting the natural reproductive pattern of wild birds, which raise one or two broods a year.

2. Domesticated birds, however, can lose this natural rhythm and remain broody beyond this time. Since more than two broods per year is too much of physical strain for the hen, you should prevent additional egg laying after the first or second brood.

3. One possibility is not to let the hen build a nest. Simply do not provide any nesting material.

4. Many hens, however, respond by plucking their own or their mate’s feathers.

5. In this case, let the hen build a nest and lay eggs. Remove each egg as it is laying, and substitute a dummy egg or two. Then hen will sit on these eggs until she gets tired of sitting.

6. Then you can remove the eggs. You do not have to worry that the hen will suffer stress.
