Some simple things you have to watch for when breeding your canary birds.
First you have to make sure you have a breeding pair (Male and Female) and they are in the condition for breeding.

- Breeding Cage

- Vary in sizes and shapes, make sure to have enough room for your pair to breed and feed their young. The average breeding cage is 18"L x 15"H x 15"D.

Cuttlebone (extra source of calcium)

Nest

You can but it from pet stores that deal with canary products. The material it is made with can vary. For canary it is round and usually made of plastic. You will need to sew a nest pad, which is made out of cotton to the bottom of the plastic nest.

Nesting materials

You can buy them from any pet stores that deal with birds. I do not recommend the ones made of cotton as they can get tangled in feet and cause problems or break the eggs when the female get out of the nest due to that. I recommend using burlap from any kind of bags made of it. You have to take it a part as strings. Be aware that the burlap needs to be washed several times with water and soap before you use it and if you washed it in the washing machine that will be great.

or you can use

Mites powder

Use the one that is safe on your birds. Do not use highly concentrated ones (5% is good). Apply to the nest to prevent any type of mite or ant problem from getting into the nest. Also spread the Powder in the flights and bottom of the breeding cages.

Bird bath

Insures hatching since living in a dry climate, eggs need a certain amount of humidity for the chick to break out the egg shell. Also to keep your bird clean.

Pulling eggs

If you want your eggs to hatch at the same day (which I recommend) you have to pull the freshly laid egg and replace it with dummy eggs, when the hen finish laying you can return all the eggs that you have pulled out and put them in the nest after removing the dummy eggs. The pulled out eggs should be put in a clean container that might have birds seed and should be kept in an adequate room temperature.

Egg candling

At 5-8 days you can candle your eggs to make sure they are fertile and trash the unfertilized ones. You can use a flash light for this purpose. The fertilized one, you can see the veins going all around the egg, the unfertilized one you will see nothing just a clear egg. Make sure to wash your hands good before handling the eggs.

Hatching

Chicks will hatch after 14 days from the day the hen incubate them, allow 2-3 days more as some of them may take longer.
