Hi everybody ,

Cockatiel is one of the most delightful birds that the one enjoys breeding it , watching its babies and noticing the affection of the parents towards their babies . It's a solemn beautiful bird which shows magnificence . It has a very nice and pleasant sound that expresses its feelings .

Mating :

This is one of the most important points in keeping cockatiels . Mating and breeding are easy processes in this bird . Male and female birds choose each other . Each pair bond very well . There are two ways to prepare the birds for breeding . I'll talk about keeping young birds together in an aviary till the breeding season .

First method ( keeping in groups ( aviaries )) :

Birds are put in a big aviary or room . Stable beech perches should be provided not to be eaten by birds . It's better to put each color in an aviary ( e.g. Normal Grey cockatiels are put in an aviary and Pearl cockatiels are put in another aviary . When the birds are mature and it's easy to differentiate between males and females , we let the number of male cockatiels equals to the number of females and put them together in one aviary . By doing that we give the bird the opportunity to choose each other for mating . After that you will notice harmony and affection between birds , then it's time to hang nest boxes after putting wood chips inside .

Second method ( keeping in cages ) :

There are two ways in this method :

First way :

Young birds are kept together in an aviary . It's better to put each color in an aviary ( e.g. Normal Grey cockatiels are put in an aviary and Pearl cockatiels are put in another aviary . When the birds are mature and it's easy to differentiate between males and females ( at age 6 to 7 months ) , males are separated and divided in cages , each male in a cage and females are kept together . After a week a female is put with every male among the cages . In case any birds from different cages show interest towards each other , add them together in one cage . After birds get along with each other nest boxes are put in the cages . You must notice very well if any birds choose each other and immediately put them together in one cage , after two days put the nest boxes with wood chips inside . It's better to put the same colors together .

Second way :

This way is like the previous one but it differs in putting all young birds colors together in one aviary . When the birds are mature and it's easy to differentiate between males and females ( at age 6 to 7 months ) , males are put in one aviary together and females in another one . The two aviaries are put in front of each other and you will notice the following :

In the aviary of the males you will hear a lot of loud singing and warbling and you will notice male dances in which males raise their wings while being closed slightly away from their bodies with their comb down and move quickly on the perches .

In the aviary of females if you get near the females you will hear a husky sound which indicates that they are ready to mate and lay eggs , some females might try to warble as well .

Males are separated and divided in cages , each male in a cage and females are kept together . After a week a female is put with every male among the cages . After two days you might see the birds mating but this isn't a sign for laying eggs , it just indicates that the birds are in harmony . Some birds might get along in just ten minutes and you notice them mating as they already reached the highest heat . After birds get along with each other nest boxes are put in the cages .

I prefer that way for the following reasons :

- Birds reach the heat process which is indicated by the husky sound of females and the loud singing and warbling of males .

- The easiness and fastness of the breeding process .

- The fastness of laying eggs and reproduction .

Best wishes and good luck :)
