Hi everybody ,

The sign of the beginning of the breeding process is released by the male . After mating the male cockatiel rushes towards the nest box to discover it , then it gets inside it and starts to warble to attract and encourage the female to enter the nest box . After a few time the female heads towards the nest box to enter it . Now starts the early stages of breeding as the male exits the nest box followed by the female that stays in the nest box to prepare for laying eggs . Peace and quietness is required during this period .

It's noticeable that during fertilization male cockatiels don't get down the females unless they complete the fertilization process . They choose the perfect position to complete this process which is an advantage of this bird . The probability of getting unfertilized eggs is rare in cockatiels . The fertilization process starts when you hear a lot of loud singing and warbling from males and notice male dances in which males raise their wings while being closed slightly away from their bodies with their comb down and move quickly on the perches . Then the female poses for fertilizing and the male rides her and the process is completed .

Females start to lay eggs and males don't leave the nest box unless they attend the laying of the first egg .

Both of the birds share incubating the eggs they sometimes divide them between each other .

When you check the nest box the female defends it vigorously and releases a hissing sound to defend her eggs . It rarely leaves the eggs or the nest box .

When the eggs hatch , both birds take care of the hatchlings . The male might show some aggression towards the babies specially in weaning time . The reason is that males want the babies to leave the nest box to start a new breeding process .

Best wishes and good luck :)
