Hi everybody ,

This topic was put in the arab forum by " Mohammed Reda " so , all his copyrights are reserved .

This is a link to the original text : http://www.canaryfans.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=42502" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In this topic I'll talk about ways of color inheritance in cockatiels in a simple illustration to start from and understand the concept of cockatiel genetics .

Image

Cockatiel color traits are divided into :

1- Dominant traits : carried by the bird and appear on it like :

- Normal Grey .

2- Recessive traits : carried by the bird but don't appear on the bird and appears on the offspring like :

1- Light Pied .
2- Heavy Pied .
3- Whiteface .
4- Fallow .
5- Recessive Silver .

3- Recessive sex-linked traits :

Are the traits that control the gender of the bird . In males it appears in the two X chromosomes , because males are indicated by XX .

Females carry these traits on their only X chromosome as females are indicated by XY .

Recessive sex-linked traits are abundant in :

1- Pearl .
2- Lutino .
3- Cinnamon .
4- Albino .

These are some rules of color mutations :

1- When pairing a normal male with a normal female the result is : 100 % normal .

2- When pairing sex-linked birds the result is : 100 % sex-linked birds .

3- When pairing sex-linked male to normal female the result is : 50 % normal males carrying the sex-linked trait , 50 % sex-linked females .

4- When pairing sex-linked female to normal male the result is : 50 % normal males carrying the sex-linked trait , 50 % normal females .

5- When pairing recessive traits the result is : 100 % recessive birds .

6- When pairing recessive trait with normal the result is : 100 % normal birds carrying the recessive trait .

Best wishes and good luck :)
