When buying new birds, these are some of the signs you should be looking for before you spend your money to get a sick bird. Remember also that you should quarantine all new birds for as long as possible to avoid infecting the rest of your stock if the new bird was sick. Quarantine should be an absolute minimum of 30 days.
Why we quarantine?
- If the bird was healthy we will make sure of that.
- If the bird was sick and taking medicine for treatment or making the symptoms less obvious , during the 30 days the bird will get better and healthy or it will stay sick and in either ways we can tell.

A healthy bird should be:

• Active and brisk, and move freely around the cage or aviary.
• Clean, bright and colorful in appearance.
• The eyes should be clear and bright.
• May not be singing but should be chirping and making noise.

A healthy bird should NOT be:
• Puffed up and sitting motionless.
• Have watery or sore eyes; eyes may also be red and inflamed.
• Should not sneeze or shiver.
• Should not have watery discharge from the beak.
• Should not have droppings that are white and watery.
• Be “light” with little or no body weight.
• Should not have droppings/faeces around vent

By following and knowing these symptoms and signs at least we will avoid the big chances of getting a sick bird.
